Verizon vs. Time Warner

by Jennifer Gigantino, Demand Media

Verizon is a global telecommunications company that offers cable television, Internet and landline, digital and wireless telephone service. Its fiber-optic network is called FiOS. Time Warner Cable is the second largest cable company in the country. It offers high-speed Roadrunner Internet service and landline telephone service in addition to digital cable television service.

Television Services

Verizon offers two types of television service. Its satellite service, DirecTV, offers over 200 channels, with digital video recorder (DVR) and high-definition access available at extra cost. Specialty channel packs -- including kids', adult and Spanish language channels -- are available at extra cost. FiOS TV is Verizon's fiber-optic television service, which includes over 130 high-definition television channels and is available with remote DVR access, downloadable television shows and access to ESPN 3D, the first 3-D sports network in the United States. Time Warner's digital television service packages are highly customizable, with add-on options that include DVR service, specialty channel packs, and HDTV access. All packages include Look Back, which allows you to watch any show that aired within the previous 72 hours. Additionally, there is an iPad application available that turns any room into a TV room.

Internet Services

Verizon's FiOS Internet access is delivered to your residence on 100 percent fiber-optic cable. Service plans are available in four download/upload speeds that range from 15/5 Mbps to 150/35 Mbps. Verizon also offers high-speed DSL Internet access in download speeds that range from 0.5 to 15 Mbps. Both types of service plans include free access to Verizon Wi-Fi hot spots across the U.S. Time Warner offers Road Runner Internet services that work through a high speed cable modem and provide you with download speeds suitable for any needs, from emailing and light surfing to online gaming and streaming video. Time Warner Cable also offers mobile Internet service, which allows you to connect your computer to the Internet wherever 3G and 4G enabled devices have reception.

Phone Services

Verizon's fiber-optic network also supports crystal-clear digital telephone service with unlimited domestic telephone calls, caller ID and many other optional features. Additionally, Verizon offers simple, reliable landline services in a variety of different plans that include caller ID, voice mail and call waiting. Time Warner Cable's digital telephone service allows you to check your voice mail remotely and visually on your computer. Nationwide, continent-wide and international calling plans are available. All plans include features such as caller ID, call waiting and the ability to set up distinctive ring tones for specific people.

Verizon's services are available across the country. To find out if FiOS or other Verizon services are available at your residence, visit Verizon.com and type in your home address.
