AT&T; and Juno provide high-speed broadband Internet using DSL technology. AT&T; offers Internet plans with a range of connection speeds that cater to different types of customers, from casual to frequent Internet users. Plans with slower speeds are adequate for moderate web browsing and emailing, while faster speeds are needed for customers who use the Internet for streaming and downloading movies or for online gaming. In comparison, Juno offers a standard DSL plan for all subscribers.
AT&T; Plans and Features
AT&T; offers a range of high-speed DSL Internet plans. They include online photo and video storage and an Internet security suite powered by McAfee with anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall protection. The security suite is free with AT&T;'s DSL Direct Elite and Pro plans, and it is available at an additional monthly fee with the DSL Direct Express and Basic plans. Subscribers can register up to 11 email accounts, and they have access to 24-hour customer support and AT&T; Wi-Fi hot spots throughout the United States when using a Wi-Fi-enabled device.
Juno Plans and Features
Juno is a low-cost Internet service provider that offers dial-up and high-speed DSL Internet. With each subscription, customers receive a modem with a firewall, free Norton AntiVirus Online security suite, 24-hour customer support and email with built-in spam and virus protection. The company's DSL plan also includes free access to a back-up Juno dial-up account.
Cost Comparison
At the time of publication, AT&T;'s DSL Direct Basic, Express and Pro plans were available for $19.95 per month, and the DSL Direct Elite plan was available for $24.95, without any term commitments. In addition, a one-time charge of $62.05 was applicable for a DSL modem or $87.5 for an AT&T; Wireless Gateway. Charges may differ if a customer opts to bundle a DSL service with another AT&T; service, including television or home phone service. At the time of publication, Juno's DSL service was available for an introductory monthly fee of $9.95, which includes a wireless modem. This fee may not be available in all areas and a term period may be applicable.
Data Cap Comparison
AT&T;'s DSL Internet service customers are subject to a usage allowance of 150 GB per month. Notices are sent to customers who exceed this bandwidth limit for the first two months that the monthly allowance is reached. If the monthly allowance is exceeded for a third time, a fee is charged for every 50 GB above the monthly limit. At the time of publication, Juno had not implemented a data usage cap.
Speed Comparison
Juno's DSL Internet Service plan features download speeds of up to 6.0 Mbps. In comparison, AT&T; offers a range of DSL plans with different connection speeds. AT&T;'s DSL Direct Basic plan provides download speeds of up to 768 Kbps, the DSL Direct Express plan features download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps, and the DSL Direct Pro plan offers download speeds of up to 3.0 Mbps. The DSL Direct Elite plan features faster download speeds of up to 6.0 Mbps, comparable to the Juno DSL service.
Considerations
In a 2010 PC Magazine study of Internet connection speeds, AT&T;'s DSL service ranked 10th out of 14 national Internet service providers. The service also ranked 11th out of 16 ISPs in PC Magazine's 2010 Reader's Choice Awards. AT&T;'s DSL service also ranked sixth out of 10 providers in the magazine's 2009 Internet Service Providers Service and Reliability Survey. Juno's DSL service was not included in PC Magazine's studies.
