Verizon, a longtime leader in providing cellphone and Internet connectivity, and Juno, a relative newcomer to the field, both offer DSL-type Internet service. With plans starting at under $25 per month, both Verizon and Juno make fast Internet service accessible and offer a variety of packages with additional free or low-cost features.
Coverage and Connectivity
With the largest 3G network in the United States as of 2011 and a rapidly expanding 4G network with Long Term Evolution technology, Verizon offers fast speeds with reduced delays in loading and buffering. Verizon's DSL service is available in 25 states. A brand of United Online, Juno offers DSL service for both Macintosh and PC at speeds up to 100 times that of dial-up service, but coverage is limited. You must enter a telephone number to determine if Juno DSL is available in your area.
Plans and Costs
Verizon's residential DSL plans start at $25 monthly for high-speed Internet, with a faster High Speed Internet Enhanced plan available at $40, as of June 2011. You can bundle DSL services with phone and television, or create a custom bundle to fit your needs. High Speed Internet Enhanced also includes Wi-Fi hotspot access. Juno DSL plans begin at $10 monthly, with Juno Platinum available at $11 per month. All Juno plans are compatible with instant messaging programs such as MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and iChat.
Added Features
Verizon's DSL service includes nine additional email accounts, 10MB of personal Web space for creating a blog or a website and a wireless router at no additional cost. Full-time support is available, including live chat. Juno's DSL plans include free Norton AntiVirus protection and email with video options.
Compatibility
Verizon's DSL service is available for both Windows and Macintosh and works with any browser. Juno offers Juno Turbo for Windows and Juno Platinum for Macintosh and Linux Linspire and isn't compatible with some browsers such as Firefox and Netscape. Juno support recommends Internet Explorer. A number of operating systems, including early versions of Windows, aren't compatible with Juno; users of these systems must check for compatibility through Juno's website.
