How to Connect a VCR to a Cable Box & TV

by James Clark, Demand Media

Connecting a VCR to a cable box and television lets you record and watch programs on VHS. The cable box hooks up to the VCR with a coaxial cable and a rotating metal connector to lock the components together. A composite cable with red, white and yellow plugs can connect the VCR to your TV set. Setting up this system takes less than 10 minutes.

Step 1

Twist the connector on one end of a coaxial cable onto the back of the cable box using the jack labeled for output.

Step 2

Fasten the other end of the cable to the VCR's threaded input on the back of the component.

Step 3

Push the three colored plugs on one end of the composite cable into the three matching outputs on the VCR.

Step 4

Insert the plugs on the other end of the cable into the TV's color-coded jacks.

Step 5

Turn on the power to all equipment.

Step 6

Press the video input key on the TV remote control until you see the image from the cable box.
