Can You Connect Two Comcast Cable Boxes in One Home?

by Darrin Meyer, Demand Media

XFINITY TV from Comcast Cable delivers over 200 digital cable channels, with features including the option to add a digital video recorder (DVR) to the set-top receiver box, allowing you to record and store programming to watch at any time. Since many households contain multiple TVs and viewers, Comcast has released a service known as AnyRoom DVR. The DVR connects to other receivers to record and view programming from each connected TV.

Receivers

Comcast subscribers have a variety of set-top receiver boxes to choose from with XFINITY TV, dependent upon the programming package selected and the viewing habits of the subscriber. Both standard- and high-definition receivers are available, for the standard and HD plans, with the option to add the DVR box and service to each of them. The basic DVR stores up to 45 hours of programming, while the HD DVR stores up to 300 hours in SD or 60 in HD.

AnyRoom DVR

While Comcast allows subscribers to have multiple DVRs, without the AnyRoom DVR service those DVRs will function independently and only serve a single TV. Any recordings must be set up on each individual DVR, even when programming remotely by computer or other wireless device. With AnyRoom DVR, the primary DVR is connected to up to three non-DVR receivers, networking the boxes to allow access to the DVR through any TV connected to one of the other receivers.

Features/Equipment

With AnyRoom DVR, you get the full range of DVR functionality from each of the connected non-DVR boxes, including the ability to view existing and current recordings, manage recordings and folders, record and view (on HDTV sets) HD content, and pause, rewind and fast-forward playback. The primary, or hub, DVR will be the DCX 3400M model, and each secondary, or terminal receiver will be the DCX 3200M (as of 2011).

Availabity/Installation

The AnyRoom DVR service is not available in all Comcast markets, as of 2011. To find out if it is offered in your area, contact your local Comcast office or call 800-XFINITY to determine availability, learn more about what is required and what additional monthly fees will accompany the upgrade. Upon installation, the technician will connect the hub DVR to the cable service and the terminal receivers to the hub, as well as help you connect the receivers to each TV and ensure the service is working properly.
