How Do I Set Up a DSL Modem?

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

It is a relatively simple affair to set up a working DSL modem. There are no software drivers to install, nor any need to even turn on your computer. All you need to do is prepare your home phone lines. You will need filter your home phones, since DSL is transmitted through your phone wiring and can bleed noise and distortions into your telephone if not filtered, then plug the modem into the phone line.

Step 1

Plug all in-use phone lines into the DSL filters, then plug the filters into the open phone jacks. The filters will prevent the DSL noise from spilling over into your phone conversations.

Step 2

Plug one end of your DSL cable into an open phone jack that does not have a DSL filter on it, and plug the other end into the "In" port on the back of the DSL modem.

Step 3

Connect the power cable to your modem and plug it into an electrical socket.

Step 4

Plug the Ethernet cable into the "Out" port on your DSL modem, then plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer. You will now be able to access the Internet through your DSL modem connection.
