A DSL modem -- short for "Digital Subscriber Line" modem -- is a little electronic gizmo used to convert the broadband Internet being sent down your phone line into signals that can be interpreted and used by your computer's Ethernet adapter. Before any of these magical connections can take place, however, you first have to plug the DSL modem into the proper phone line. You will also need to install a DSL filter to ensure that you don't get any noise or interference on the line while you make calls.
Step 1
Plug the DSL filter into an open phone jack. Or, if you have a standalone DSL filter, first plug the Y-splitter -- included with the filter -- into the jack and then plug the DSL filter into one of the Y-splitter's connection ports.
Step 2
Plug one end of your DSL cable into the marked jack on the DSL filter.
Step 3
Plug the other end of your DSL cable into the DSL modem.
Step 4
Plug in your modem's AC adapter. The modem will automatically detect the DSL connection and configure itself accordingly.
Tips & Warnings
- You can plug your phone line into the second jack on the DSL filter or the Y-splitter if desired.
