AT&T; provides new customers with the option to set up their high-speed Internet connections with a CD-based installation wizard, which can be extremely helpful in setting up advanced connections types. If you only need to set up a modem to connect one computer to the Internet, you can save yourself some time and establish your DSL connection without using an installation CD.
Step 1
Connect your DSL modem to a phone outlet via a phone cable. Plug one end of the phone cable into the DSL port on the back of your modem, and then plug the opposite end of the cable into a telephone outlet.
Step 2
Connect your modem to your computer via Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into your modem's Ethernet port. Plug the opposite end of the cable into your computer's Ethernet port.
Step 3
Plug the barrel connector end of the modem's power source into the modem's Power port. Plug the transformer end of the cable into a power outlet.
Step 4
Open a web browser on your computer. Type your modem's IP address into your browser's address bar -- press the "Enter" key on your keyboard. You can usually find the IP address labeled on the underside of your modem.
Step 5
Type your username, password and DSL phone number into their respective fields, when the "Customer Information" page appears. Click "OK."
Step 6
Click on the "PPPOE" bubble on the following page, and then click "Next." Restart your web browser to begin surfing the web -- close the browser, and then re-open it.
Tips & Warnings
- If you have telephone service on the same line as your DSL, plug a DSL filter into the telephone outlet before inserting the phone cable. Plug the modem's phone cable into the filter's DSL port. Use the Phone port for a telephone's cable.
