How to Set Up Wi-Fi for PlayStation 3 & DIRECTV DVR

by Elijah Chau, Demand Media

Wi-Fi networks allow for your computers to have wireless Internet throughout your home or office, but this can also apply to other devices such as the PlayStation 3 and your DirectTV DVR. Wi-Fi-enabled devices can connect to a wireless network and obtain Internet access, which removes the need for a hard-wired connection. To set up a Wi-Fi network for both devices, you simply need to assemble several wireless networking accessories.

Wireless Network Setup

Step 1

Plug your wireless router into your Internet modem, making sure that an Ethernet cable connects the modem to the router's WAN port. This will be identical to the router's other Ethernet ports, but it will have a WAN label.

Step 2

Use a second Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer.

Step 3

Open your Internet browser and enter the router's configuration menu. This process can vary, depending on your router's specifications, but typically you'll have to input some variation of "192.168.0.1" into your browser's address bar. Refer to your router's manual for additional information.

Step 4

Navigate to the router's wireless network configuration tab. The exact location can vary, depending on your router, but you'll want to look for a series of pulldown menus and text entry boxes that allow you to customize information such as an SSID.

Step 5

Set your wireless network's SSID -- this is the network name -- and wireless password. Routers will typically feature WEP- and WPA-based password security standards. The exact specifications and requirements for both standards vary, but once a password and network name are decided, save these settings to create your wireless network.

PlayStation Configuration

Step 1

Turn on both your DirectTV DVR and PlayStation 3. The exact process for setting up Wi-Fi on your DVR can vary, depending on its model number, but on the PlayStation 3, use your controller to navigate to "Network Settings." This will be located under "Settings" on the PlayStation's homepage.

Step 2

Highlight "Internet Connection" and press "X" on your controller to enable it.

Step 3

Scroll down to "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." A prompt will appear notifying you that you'll be disconnected from the Internet. Press "X" to approve it.

Step 4

Select "Easy" under the Settings method prompt. Choose "Wireless" on the next screen.

Step 5

Press "Scan" to search for available wireless networks. The wireless network you created earlier will be displayed here. Select it by pressing "X."

Step 6

Configure the wireless network-specific settings in the next series of prompts, ensuring that your network's name, password standard and password are properly set. Press "X" once finished to save these settings and connect your PlayStation to your wireless network.
