The Digital Video Recorder, or DVR, records television shows and movies broadcast on cable television. If you would like to back up your TV shows and movies from your DVR to your computer, you can do it through an RCA audio and video input. This requires a special graphics card. Many electronics and computer stores sell these specific software and hardware pieces for this task. These connections could also be HDMI or USB.
Step 1
Connect the audio/video cable to your DVR's "Output" connection. Connect the other end of your cable to your computer's input. This might be RCA, HDMI or USB.
Step 2
Load the video capture software that came with your graphics card hardware package from the "Programs" menu on your computer.
Step 3
Wait for the software to load with the DVR menu now on your computer screen. Use the DVR remote to scroll through the DVR menu and choose the TV show or movie that you want to record on your computer.
Step 4
Click the "Record" button on the capture software, and then press the "Play" button on the DVR. Wait for the movie to play completely, and then click the "Stop" button on the capture software.
Step 5
Save the video from the "Save As" option on the software to save the digital copy on your computer.
