Be careful when looking for television programming online. An array of live TV and cable TV programs are available to watch online from provider websites which pirate the content. These sites are illegal and rarely provide the programming they promise in a watchable format, around the clock and with any reasonable level of reliability. There are other, more efficient and legal options for you, including online broadcasts from major cable providers, sports leagues and licensed distributors.

Step 1

Visit your cable provider online. Some cable providers offer special live online viewing options like Time Warner Cable's TW Cable TV for i-Pad, or Verizon's FiOS TV with live ESPN channels over the Internet. If your cable providers offers such a service you may be required to sign up and pay additional fees added to your existing monthly bill to receive it.

Step 2

Visit the major sports leagues online for the option to watch live games, events and analysis online. MLB, the NBA, NHL and NFL all offer monthly and seasonal packages which provide you with access to all broadcast content. The games are subject to regional blackout rules, which means it might be difficult to watch your team's home games. But the websites will work in locations around the globe. Rates tend to be cheaper for season-long packages, but monthly packages provide the freedom to cancel when you wish.

Step 3

Visit your favorite networks' or cable channels' websites. In some cases networks or channels will provide the opportunity to watch programming online at no charge. Follow the on-screen instructions to watch live broadcasts online. If no such option is available you can usually watch recent episodes or portions thereof through these websites.

Step 4

If you are unable to locate the programming you wish to view online, try the online television and movie database Hulu (hulu.com). Here you will find archived TV show episodes and films available to watch anytime. You must be a member to watch, and the service only works for online viewers located within the United States.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try watching online programming catalogs online if you have missed the show or event you planned on watching.
  • Downloading programming from illegal pirate sites can result in fines and other legal penalties.
