by Joe McIndoe, Demand Media

Comcast is an entertainment and communications conglomerate widely known for its cable Internet and TV services. Its Xfinity broadband product delivers high-speed, fiber-optic Internet to homes and businesses. The service is sometimes bundled with cable TV and phone service as well. The advantages of broadband over dial-up are speed and constant connectivity. Not only is your connection must faster, but you remain perpetually connected to the Internet. This makes getting online easier and quicker. To hook up Comcast Internet, you need to set up the cable modem and run the installation software on your computer.

Step 1

Run the cable from the wall outlet to your Comcast modem.

Step 2

Plug in the modem's power supply unit to a wall socket.

Step 3

Turn off the computer and any connected devices, such as a printer or fax machine.

Step 4

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the modem. Plug the other end into the computer.

Step 5

Turn the computer on and run the installation software that came with your Comcast cable modem.

Step 6

Run a "power cycle" if you are still not connected. To do this, unplug the cable modem from its power source, wait two minutes, then plug it back in. You can also try restarting your computer.
