How to Compare Unlimited Long Distance Phone Plans

Not all long distance phone plans are created equal, nor are they all truly unlimited. To remain competitive with cell phone companies that offer nationwide calling to their subscribers at a flat monthly rate, landline phone companies also often offer packages that include unlimited long distance. If you frequently use long distance on your landline, it may save you money to sign up on one of these plans rather than paying per minute fees.

Step 1

Make a list of all the long distance companies that offer unlimited plans. Start with any local companies you are aware of, then use the Internet to find others.

Step 2

Make a list of the criteria you will use to judge each plan. This should include monthly fee, restrictions, limitations, fine print and any additional charges you can expect to incur.

Step 3

Research each company and record the required data. Visiting each company's web site and viewing their available plans is the best way to do this. If you are confused about any of the information on the site or have any questions, contact customer service via e-mail or phone and make sure you understand the plan details. For companies that have more than one plan, write each plan's details on your list.

Step 4

Determine which features are most important to you. Some plans may include additional features, such as unlimited calling to Canada or Mexico or discounts on overseas calls. If any of these features are important to you, cross off any companies that do not offer these options.

Step 5

Consider bundle options. Some companies offer bundles that combine unlimited long distance with other features such as voicemail, call waiting and three-way calling. For plans that don't offer bundles, make sure you've written down what the cost is for each extra feature you desire.

Step 6

Compare the plans. Start by crossing off any plans that do not have the features you want. Next, compare the prices of each plan to find the best price on a plan that offers everything you need.

Step 7

Double-check for restrictions or limitations. Revisit the company's web site and review all the terms and conditions before signing up. If you do not wish to sign a contract, make sure that is not required. Some companies may offer unlimited long distance calling to any other subscriber in their network, but may charge per minute for out of network calls. If you are not happy with any of the terms and conditions, eliminate the plan and review the others for a suitable match.
