How to Connect a LAN Cable

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

A LAN cable, which also is called an Ethernet cable, is a length of specialized wire that allow computers or other Ethernet-enabled devices to utilize a broadband modem's Internet connection. There isn't anything too tricky about connecting a LAN cable to a particular device, but the process can be somewhat confusing if you are new to electronics or computers in general.

Step 1

Examine the end of the cable, which is the connector point. Note that the connector looks similar to a telephone line, except wider. You will need to find the appropriate jack on both the broadband modem and on the device to which you want to connect.

Step 2

Examine the broadband modem and locate the "out" Ethernet jack. Do not confuse the "Out" jack with the "In" jack, which is applicable only on DSL modems, because one is for sending the Ethernet signal out from the modern while the other is for bringing the Ethernet connection into the modem for interpretation.

Step 3

Plug one end of the cable into the "Out" jack in the broadband modem.

Step 4

Locate the Ethernet jack on your computer or other device. This is typically located on the back of the device, and looks exactly like the Ethernet jack on the broadband modem.

Step 5

Plug the other end of the LAN cable into the Ethernet port on your computer or other device.
