The Best Internet Service for Travelers

by Terry Hollis, Demand Media

There's nothing more frustrating than being away from home without an Internet connection. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding a Wi-Fi connection, but you could be caught without a signal altogether. Mobile broadband companies offer ways to keep in touch that allow you to enjoy the speed and reliability of high-speed connections. Forget about wasting your time with dial-up Internet service when you're on the road.

Clearwire

Clearwire Internet service offers a lot of "spectrum" with its 3G/4G plan. More spectrum means you have more open channels to gain access to the Internet. This translates to faster, more reliable service, even during peak hours. Clear's 4G/3G service includes 4G coverage in over 80 United States cities and 3G service nationwide. PCs with an Intel WiMAX module in them also have access to international service on Clear's international partner networks.

Comcast/XFINITY

The lowest priced plan from Comcast gives you access to 3G connection nationwide. Comcast's Nationwide Preferred plan gives you faster speeds with unlimited 4G connection and the option of a mobile hot spot that allows you to share your service with up to five other users. Comcast's 3G coverage area is enormous throughout the United States and no roaming charges are applied in cities with 4G access. There are international roaming rates though.

Verizon

Verizon Wireless gives its customers mobile 3G and 4G plans with an extra access fee for smartphones. Its lowest monthly plan lets you use 1GB per month with extra charges after you go over your limit. Its 3G services covers 264 metropolitan areas and are boosted by the Long Term Evolution concept that increases upload and download speeds to between 5 to 12Mbps. Global travelers can check out Verizon's Occasional Travelers plan that provides up to 21 days of international service based on your destination.

AT&T; U-verse

AT&T; holds the title as the nation's largest Internet service provider as of 2011, which means you can take advantage of the largest Wi-Fi network in the nation. AT&T;'s hot spot map lets you search the city or country of your choice to find the closest connection available, including locations like the Seychelles and American Samoa. Its lowest priced Wi-Fi plan is enough for basic local and travel access, and with a no-contract option you can feel free to change plans as your needs change.
