Time Warner Cable provides cable Internet services through their Road Runner division. Cable Internet provides you with a high-speed Internet connection that operates through the same line that gives you your cable television. You may have the misfortune of experiencing a poor connection, where you experience loss of service and poor service quality. There are several causes for this, as well as several solutions you can try.

Basic Cable Troubleshooting

Try some basic troubleshooting measures to help you determine the source of your disconnecting connection. To see if your cable service is at fault, check your cable television service. If you find any problems with your normal cable TV service, such as loss of picture quality, intermittent picture or audio problems, or others then your cable connection may be at fault. Contact your cable TV provider for further technical assistance.

Checking for Hardware Issues

Sometimes a fickle cable Internet connection can be caused by your computer and networking hardware. Improper connections can cause connections to drop. Check all of your networking connection cables, meaning both the coaxial cables from the cable service and all Ethernet cables. Make certain that none of them are loose. To check a cable connection, push lightly toward the device to see if it's securely seated. Check all of your Ethernet cables leading from and to devices like your modem, any networking equipment like a router as well as your computer.

Further Hardware Issues

If all of your coaxial and Ethernet cables are securely seated in their various ports, then other hardware issues may be at fault. Cable modems provided through Time Warner's Internet cable service, Road Runner, may sometimes have a switch or button labelled "Pipe Lock," "Standby" or "Power." Make certain this switch is turned to "On." Restart your computer. Power cycle your networking equipment, including the modem. This involves turning the devices off completely for thirty seconds and then plugging them back in and turning them on.

Technical Support

Sometimes, you just can't find the problem with your Time Warner Cable connection yourself. It may be something you aren't equipped to deal with, such as a faulty modem or a problem with your cable line itself. If you tried all of the troubleshooting strategies listed here with no results, then contact Time Warner or Road Runner technical support. They can take you through advanced troubleshooting techniques, check your connection from a distance or decide to send a technician to look at your connection.
