The various connection ports on the back of your digital cable box and TV can be daunting. One important thing to keep in mind is that many ports are duplicates, allowing multiple devices to be connected. Actually, only two types of ports are used on your TV equipment: video and audio. Each type of port has two directions, "In" (for receiving a signal from another device) and "Out" (for sending a signal to another device). You must make sure you are using the right cable to transfer audio and video signals from one device to another.
Step 1
Insert one end of the coaxial cable into the wall jack installed by your cable company. Turn the fastener on the end of the connector clockwise to tighten. If the coaxial cable is already connected to a source outside the building, it's already live and ready for connection to your cable box.
Step 2
Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the "Cable" port on the digital cable box. The port may also be labeled "RF In." Twist the fastener clockwise to tighten.
Step 3
Locate the "Video Out" ports on the back of the cable box and connect the S-video cable to the corresponding port. The S-video cable carries the video signal out of the cable box and to your TV.
Step 4
Connect the other end of the S-video cable to the "Video In" port on the TV. This cable brings the video signal from the cable box to the TV.
Step 5
Connect the RCA cables to the "Audio Out" ports on the cable box. The cable labeled "L" connects to the "Left Speaker" port and "R" connects to the "Right Speaker" port. If the cables are color-coded, insert the red plug into the red jack and the white plug into the white jack.
Step 6
Insert the other end of the RCA cables into "Audio In" ports on your TV. Be sure to match "L" from the cable box with the "L" on the TV and the same applies to the "R" cable connections.
Step 7
Plug the power strip into an electrical outlet and plug the power cords from the TV and cable box into the power strip.
Step 8
Press the "Power" button on both devices to test the connections.
