AT&T; offers a wide variety of cell phone and smart phone services to its customers worldwide. Smart phone users have options in multimedia messaging platforms and can choose between using the AT&T; 3G network and multimedia messaging services more commonly known as MMS. Between the two, there are several differences regarding speed and operation of a smart phone.

3G Service

With AT&T; smart phones, like the iPhone, the phone comes equipped with 3G wireless Internet access. This allows the end user to browse the Internet from anywhere, send email and even watch videos on popular websites. However, there is a vast difference in connectivity when it comes to choosing between AT&T; 3G Internet and MMS messaging.

MMS Messaging

Multimedia messaging, or MMS, works just like text messaging features on all smart phones. The user opens up a new text message, inserts multimedia like voice messages, videos or pictures and sends them via that medium. The end user does not have to leave the text messaging program open in order for the message to send; a big difference when compared to sending data on the 3G network, where the application must remain open until the message is sent.

Choosing MMS or Internet

It all comes down to personal preference. Many end users prefer the functionality of smart phone enabled email programs to communicate, while others prefer the immediate convenience of text messaging via MMS. When it comes to selecting a communication medium, there is not a right or wrong answer. It comes down to the level of comfort the user has with the messaging platform and his level of proficiency with his device.

Carriers

When it comes to Internet service and multimedia messaging services all providers that sell smart phones offer nearly identical connectivity. Nothing prevents someone using AT&T;'s service from sending email or MMS messages to someone on a different network. All of the providers are linked together giving end users worldwide connectivity on a variety of communication platforms.
