Consumers now have many choices for bringing cable television into their homes. Cable companies understand that their customers demand more freedom and choice than ever before. Many plans include hundreds of channels, DVR service and on demand programming options. Choosing the right cable plan requires first understanding your own wants and needs. Comparing plans becomes much easier when you know exactly what you're looking for.

Step 1

Make a list of the channels or kinds of programs that you watch most frequently. Make another list of features that are important to you in a cable television plan, such as DVR or high-definition picture. Determine the maximum amount you would be willing to pay for a cable package that meets your needs.

Step 2

Navigate to the home pages of several cable television providers. Check the sites for big cable companies as any smaller market companies that do business in your area.

Step 3

Look at the package deals offered by each company. Typically, cable companies offer larger numbers of channels with the more expensive packages. There may also be more features associated with premium offerings. Movie channel subscriptions often require an extra fee as well.

Step 4

Find the cable television packages that most closely meet your needs. If two packages appear identical, let cost be the determining factor in choosing one over another.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase only those features that you know you will use. If your television is not capable of displaying HD images, then you should avoid packages that include HD channels.
  • Read all the terms and conditions associated with a cable package. Beware of signing long-term service contracts.
