U-verse is AT&T;'s attempt to compete with the major cable television providers by offering digital television programming packages that can also be bundled with telephone and Internet services. Though U-verse is only available in limited areas (as of 2011), its TV service provides the features and options viewers have come to expect with the larger cable TV carriers, including DVR, high definition (HD) and premium channels, and on-demand programming as well.
U-verse Technology
U-verse differs from the major cable providers because it uses fiber-optic technology to transmit data to and from the home, instead of standard coaxial cables. The TV signals are delivered via Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) through the telephone lines to the set-top receiver box/DVR and translated into video and audio. Internet and telephone services are also connected through the set-top box and include a wireless router and more than 20 calling features.
On-Demand
On-demand choices available with U-verse include standard and high-definition TV programs and movies, a library of free on-demand programming from networks such as MTV, TBS and Lifetime and selections from the major premium channels, such as HBO, Showtime, Starz, Encore and The Movie Channel (with subscriptions to those channels). U-verse also offers pay-per-view (PPV) on-demand content, including "Same day as DVD" -- movies available on the DVD release date and free movies extras to view before renting.
Ordering/PPV
To order an on-demand program, use the on-screen program guide to select the channel and program you wish to select and/or order. PPV selections can be ordered up to two weeks prior to the viewing date, are only available at scheduled times (though they can be recorded on the DVR) and cannot be cancelled once ordered. Prices for PPV content may vary and are denoted with the on-screen ordering information.
Additional Features
Other on-demand options available include the on-screen U-bar, which allows you to customize local news, weather, sports, traffic and even stock information to display when you choose. Also, the receiver features such options as Multiview (up to four channels on screen at once), and with the optional Whole Home DVR feature, you can watch a show recorded on the main DVR on any connected TV.
