How Do I Record From a Charter DVR to a Videotape?

by Patrick Nelson, Demand Media

Charter Communications provides cable receivers and digital video recorders from manufacturers like Motorola and others. You can record from the DVR to a video cassette recorder using analog connections like composite AV cables. Composite AV cables are black with red, white and yellow color-coded plugs. The plugs correspond to color-coded jacks on the DVR and VCR. Recording from a Charter DVR to videotape involves making connections and performing the transfer.

Step 1

Plug the red and white plugs into the red and white "Audio In" jacks on the VCR. Then plug the yellow video-carrying plug into the yellow "Video In" jack.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the red and white color-coded plugs into the red and white "Audio Out" jacks on the DVR. Plug the remaining yellow plug into the yellow "Video Out" jack.

Step 3

Start the record function on the VCR and then start the playback of the DVR program that you want to archive to videotape. The VCR will record the output via the composite AV cable. Press "Stop" on the VCR and DVR when you've completed the recording.
