How to Connect a Wireless Router to Cable Modem

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

A wireless router is a device that converts the wired Internet broadband signal from your broadband modem, such as a cable modem, into a wireless signal. This allows any nearby computers equipped with wireless devices to connect to the Internet through the router's signal. Of course, before you can connect to the wireless Internet, you first have to connect the router to the modem.

Step 1

Check your cable modem to make sure the coaxial cable is firmly attached and that the AC adapter is plugged in to both the modem and an electrical socket.

Step 2

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the "Ethernet Out" port on the back of the modem.

Step 3

Plug in the power adapter for your wireless router.

Step 4

Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the "Ethernet In" port on the back of the router.

Step 5

Wait a few minutes for the router to sense the incoming connection and configure itself accordingly. The process will be completed when all the lights on the front of the router glow green.
