Linksys routers are designed to take the broadband connection from a DSL or cable modem and allow several computers to connect to that single broadband signal. Not much setup is required to get a Linksys modem router working with your DSL connection, but there are a couple of extra steps required that are not present when performing a similar setup on a cable modem.
Step 1
Plug one Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack on the back of the DSL modem, then plug the other into the "WAN" port on the Linksys router.
Step 2
Plug another Ethernet cord into the "LAN Port 1" port on the back of the Linksys router, then plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer.
Step 3
Launch your preferred Web browser and type in "192.168.1.1" This will bring you to the Linksys router's configuration page.
Step 4
Type "Admin" into the user name text box when prompted. Leave the password field blank, then click "OK" to log in to the router.
Step 5
Click the "Internet Connection Type" -- It may also be labeled "WAN connection type" -- drop-down menu and select the "PPPoE" option.
Step 6
Enter your DSL user name and password into the box that appears. This information will have been provided you by your ISP.
Step 7
Select the "Keep Alive" option, then click "Save Settings." Your router is now setup to use your DSL modem's connection.
