Connecting to Comcast Modems

by Rob Kemmett, Demand Media

Accessing Comcast's Internet service is accomplished by connecting to a modem. A modem, short for modulator/demodulator, connects a computer to the Internet by using a phone line to transmit data. If a computer can't connect to a modem, it won't connect to the Internet. Comcast's Internet service is automatically detected by a properly installed modem. Be sure to use a modem compatible with Comcast's services or you won't be able to connect to the Internet.

Installation

Installation of a Comcast compatible-modem requires a Network Access Card or universal serial bus (USB). A Network Access Card is commonly known as an Ethernet card. Depending on the computer, you will need a two-way splitter, a PCI or ISA card, a USB adapter, a USB cable, an Ethernet cable and a coaxial jumper cable. Installation for each computer varies, so consult Comcast's Installation Kit manual for specific installation instructions. No matter which computer you use, you need a cable modem. Once the modem is installed, the Comcast Internet connection is automatically detected by your computer.

Compatible Modems

Not any cable modem will work with Comcast's services. In order to connect to the Internet as a Comcast customer, you need to use a modem compatible with the provider's service. At the time of publication, there are dozens of compatible devices, such as Ambit, Arris, Cisco, Linksys and Motorola modems. For a complete list of compatible modems, consult Comcast's list of DOCSIS devices (mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/).

Where to Purchase

Modems are rented from Comcast when you order Internet service, but if you choose to use a third-party modem, you must purchase it on your own. Many large electronic and computer parts stores carry modems, as do many online retailers, such as Best Buy and Office Depot.
