How do I Tell a Crossover Cable?

by Joshua Benjamin, Demand Media

Crossover cables are specially-designed Ethernet cables that, rather than connecting a computer to the Internet, connect two computers to each other. Crossover cables and standard Ethernet cables appear visually indistinguishable at first glance. A closer inspection, however, will allow you to tell almost instantly if the crossover cable is, in fact, a crossover cable or just a standard Ethernet cable.

Step 1

Double the cord up and bring both ends together side-by-side. Make sure they are both right-side up.

Step 2

Examine the front of both connector tips. You will notice that the wires connected to the pins inside the tips are colored different from each other.

Step 3

Compare the colors in one tip to the colors in the second tip. If the wire on the outer pin in the first tip is the same color as the wire on the outer pin in the second tip, the cable is a crossover cable.
