How to Move or Transfer Email Accounts From One ISP to Another

by Maya Austen, Demand Media

Perhaps you plan on canceling your service with your current Internet Service Provider and you stand to lose your current email account with this ISP. Or perhaps you just signed up for a free email account with an alternate Web service provider, such as Google's Gmail, and you want to use this new account as your primary email account. Whatever the reason is for your wanting to move your emails from one account to another, the task can be accomplished using an online tool called "TrueSwitch."

TrueSwitch "EasyTransfer"

Step 1

Go to the secure general transfer Web page on the TrueSwitch website. TrueSwitch is an online service, owned by Esaya Incorporation, used to transfer saved email messages and address book contacts from one email account to another. Many ISPs and Web service providers partner with TrueSwitch including: AOL, AT&T;, Comcast, Cox, Charter, Earthlink, Gmail, Windows Live / Hotmail / MSN, Netscape, PeoplePC, Verizon and Yahoo!, among many others.

Step 2

Click the "Terms of Service" link to open the TrueSwitch terms of service agreement in a new window. Review the agreement, and close the window. Put a check mark in the box next to the statement acknowledging that you understand and agree to the terms and provisions of the Service. Click "Begin."

Step 3

Open the "Select A Provider" drop-down menu in the "Source Account" section. Select the ISP you wish to transfer your email messages and contacts from. "AOL," for example. Enter your email address and password for this account in the designated field boxes. TrueSwitch needs this information to access and verify your ownership of the account.

Step 4

Open the "Select A Provider" drop-down menu in the "Target Account" section. Select the ISP you wish to transfer your email messages and contacts to. Enter your email address and password for this account in the designated field boxes.

Step 5

Click "Continue." Put a check mark in the box next to each action you want to perform in the transfer. You are given the option to "Copy my E-mail History," "Copy my Address Book," "Send a Notification to Everyone in my Address Book With my New E-mail Address," "Cancel my Old Account" and "Forward my E-mails to my New E-mail Address."

Step 6

Click "Continue" again to initiate the transfer. It can take up to 24 hours for the transfer to be complete.
