When you sign up for digital subscriber line (DSL) service from Qwest, that company becomes your Internet service provider (ISP). You will not need an additional service provider unless you want a different type of Internet service beyond your Qwest DSL. Once you set up your connection as instructed in your Qwest DSL introductory materials, you simply need a web browser installed on your computer to access the Internet.

Definitions

An ISP is the company that provides your Internet service -- hence the term "Internet service provider." It does not matter which type of service that company provides, whether it is DSL, cable, satellite or dial-up. Technically, DSL refers to the type of Internet connection you are getting, meaning that you are using the digital portion of your phone line to connect to the Internet. However, signing up for DSL service from Qwest provides you not only with the hardware you need (some of which may require additional charges), but also the service to use that connection.

Setting Up

Qwest offers various service options according to your area, so check with your local representative to determine the speeds available through DSL and the hardware you need. Generally, Qwest requires that you purchase a modem or modem/router combination package to use your service. You can purchase these items through Qwest or your local electronics store. The modem lets you access your DSL through an Ethernet cable, while a modem/router combination also gives you wireless signal so you can connect all your Wi-Fi-enabled devices without cables. Follow the instructions that come with your modem package, and contact Qwest if you have trouble setting up your system.

Additional ISP

The only reason you would need an additional ISP when using Qwest services is if you want a backup option for accessing the Internet. For example, if your computer does not have Wi-Fi and you are afraid the Ethernet port is failing, you might want to use a dial-up ISP as backup until you can replace the computer. This would allow you to get on the Internet if you could not access your Qwest modem. However, in nearly all cases, this is unnecessary.

Common Misconceptions

Sometimes people confuse an ISP with a web browser. In the early days of Internet, an ISP often came with its own Internet browser, and this still occurs with some dial-up ISPs. However, your computer can connect to the Internet on DSL through any web browser. The most common browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera. All modern Windows computers come with Internet Explorer preinstalled, while Apple computers come with Safari. By using either of these, you can download a different browser if you prefer, or visit any public website of your choice.
