How to Turn a PC Into a DVR

by James Clark, Demand Media

Turning your personal computer or laptop into a digital video recorder, or DVR, lets you connect with a programming source such as cable television to record shows on the hard drive. An external TV tuner hooks up to the computer through a USB port so the PC or laptop can process the television source signal. Installing the software that comes with the tuner transforms your computer into a full-featured DVR for recording and playback of television programs. The software displays an on-screen interface that operates essentially the same as a stand-alone DVR.

Step 1

Plug in the USB cable from the external TV tuner to any available USB port on the PC or laptop.

Step 2

Open the computer's disc tray to insert the software CD that comes with the TV tuner. Close the tray.

Step 3

Click the installation buttons as they appear on your laptop or PC monitor when the software CD starts automatic playback. Restart the computer when the installation is complete.

Step 4

Connect the TV signal source, such as a cable box, to the jacks on the external TV tuner using the audio-video cable. The colors on the cable plugs match the jack colors on the cable box and external tuner.

Step 5

Double-click the icon for the external TV tuner to launch the DVR software on your computer.
