DVRs are built with storage space that allows you to save shows directly to its hard drive. However, if you enjoy watching shows on your computer or you're going to be travelling with a laptop, you can transfer the shows from your DVR to your laptop. These devices convert the analog video from a DVR into digital video that you can store on your computer.
Step 1
Plug the video and audio chords on the digital video capture device into the "Audio Out" and "Video Out" ports on the DVR. Plug the other end of the device into a USB port on your computer.
Step 2
Open the video-editing application on your computer. Windows computers come with Windows Movie Maker and Apple computers come with iMovie.
Step 3
Navigate to the capture mode within the application. In Windows Movie Maker, click on "File" and then "Capture from digital video camera." In iMovie use the toggle switch on the main screen to go to the capturing mode.
Step 4
Enter a name for the show you're going to record and click "Browse" to find the location where you'd like to save the captured show.
Step 5
Start the capture by pressing "Start Capture" or "Start Import." Play the show on the DVR. Press "Stop Capture" or "Stop Import" in the video-editing application when the show has ended. The show will be automatically saved to the location you chose.
