Thieves can break in your home or business when you are away. A digital video recorder, or DVR, system that is setup properly will catch the thief in the act, and provide evidence that could lead to an arrest. However, if you are away, days could go by before you realize that you have been victimized. You can stay on top of surveillance by viewing your DVR online. Many DVR systems come with an online component that you can set up with your cameras.
Step 1
Click the "Start" menu on the computer desktop, and enter "cmd" in the Run or Search field. Select "cmd" to open the command prompt. Type "ipconfig/all" when prompted. Click the "Enter" key. Write down the IP address listed next to "Default Gateway," "DNS Servers" and "Subnet Mask." Close the command window.
Step 2
Click the desktop "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel."
Step 3
Double-click on "Network Connections." Right-click on "Local Area Connection," then select "Properties."
Step 4
Select "Use the Following IP Addresses." Enter the IP address, as was listed in the command window, but add one number to the end of the address. For instance, if the computer's IP address is 192.172.1.1, enter 192.172.1.2 in the corresponding field. The subnet address should appear automatically after the IP address is entered, if not enter it in the corresponding field.
Step 5
Enter the default Gateway and DNS Servers numbers as well. Press "OK."
Step 6
Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon again, and select "Properties."
Step 7
Select "Exceptions," and check the box next to "Remote Assistance."
Step 8
Click on "Add Port" and press "OK." Enter "Video Transmission" as the port name, enter the port number, which your online DVR service should provide to you, and select "TCP" as the port type. Click "OK."
Step 9
Select "Add Port," enter "Remote Notification" and enter the appropriate port number.
Step 10
Select "UDP" as the port type. Open a new port, name it "Audio Transmission," enter the appropriate port number, then select "TCP" as the port type.
Step 11
Open one last port, name it "Direct Web," enter the appropriate port number, and select "TCP" as the port type. Click "OK."
Step 12
Open your Web browser. Enter the online DVR service address in the address field, and follow the prompts to register your DVR online.
Step 13
Launch the DVR software, and enter in your admin user name and password to access the DVR settings.
Step 14
Select the "Setup" or "System Settings" option, then select the option to configure the "Network." Make sure that remote connections are allowed, and enter the appropriate code for the online DVR service.
Step 15
Select "Use IP Server" and click on "Properties." Type the IP server provided by the online DVR service next to "IP Server." Save the settings and close the DVR software.
