Time Warner Cable offers a number of options to subscribers to accompany its cable TV programming packages. Among the most popular option is adding an integrated digital video recorder (DVR) to the set-top receiver box. A DVR gives viewers the ability to record and store shows to watch at any time. Depending on the type of TV you have and the programming package purchased, you can also opt for a high definition (HD) DVR.
Time Warner Cable Packages
Time Warner Cable offers packages ranging from the very basic (local, government and educational channels) to full digital cable, which includes all optional channel tiers and premium channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz. The HD channel tier makes broadcast and cable-based networks, premium channels, on-demand and pay-per-view programs available with HD resolution.
DVRs
Time Warner Cable provides a variety of set-top boxes designed to match the package selected by the subscriber. These include a basic standard definition set-top box to one with the ability to access the full range of channels and features offered with digital cable, including HD capability. The box can be substituted for one with a DVR at any level if the subscriber chooses to add that service.
HD DVR
Both the HD channel tier and DVR service require an additional monthly fee with Time Warner Cable. The HD DVR can store up to 80 hours of standard definition programming or up to 25 hours in HD. To record an HD program, tune the DVR to an HD channel and press "Record" on the remote control, or locate the channel and program using the on-screen guide and press "OK/SEL." Different recording options include setting up a single recording or programming it to record every episode of a series.
Other Details
Time Warner Cable's HD DVRs (and non-DVR HD boxes) come equipped with the two output ports needed to send HD resolution video to an HDTV: HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) and component video. The receiver/DVR automatically adjusts the picture to the maximum native resolution of the channel and program being viewed. Contact Time Warner Cable's customer service if you do not currently have an HD-capable DVR (and HD channel tier) and wish to upgrade.
