Both Verizon and Time Warner Cable offer packages that bundle cable television, high-speed Internet and home phone service. Though the competitors provide essentially the same services, there are differences between the packages. Time Warner's Triple Pack may be the best bet for those who love their television, while Verizon's Triple Play may be a hit among those who need faster Internet speed.
Cable Television
Both Verizon and Time Warner offer a host of HD and standard definition channels with their bundle packages. If it's high-definition channels you're looking for, Time Warner sets the bar, offering more than 150 choices. Verizon FiOS has two packages available: one with more than 50 HD channels and the other with more than 70 HD channels. In areas where FiOS is not available, Verizon offers DSL packages, which come with DirecTV satellite service. The standard DirecTV packages do not offer any HD channels, according to Verizon's website. Both companies offer DVR recording devices and On Demand selections that allow users to catch up on their favorite programs.
Internet
Verizon wins if the contest is based on Internet speed, as both of the company's FiOS Triple Play packages clock a faster download speed than Time Warner offers. Verizon's standard FiOS package comes with a 15 Mbps download speed, while the premium package comes with a 25 Mbps download speed. Verizon also offers DSL packages with Internet service starting at speeds from 0.5 to 1 Mbps. Time Warner's Triple Pack offerings come with 10 Mbps or 15 Mbps download speed, depending on which package you pick.
Phone Service
There aren't a lot of differences between the phone service plans offered by Verizon and Time Warner. Both plans offer free local and long distance calling within the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, along with caller ID and other features. Verizon packages include voice mail, while Time Warner offers voice mail for an additional fee. With the two plans so similar, it may not be much of a factor when trying to make a decision.
Availability
All the services in the world don't mean much if they're not available in your area. Time Warner offers its Triple Pack package in 26 states, while Verizon is relatively new to the cable television game and steadily increasing its presence around the country. Verizon offers DSL service in some areas where its FiOS service is not available. Each company has a tool on its website to let you know which packages are available in your area.
Prices
Verizon offers its basic FiOS Triple Play package for about $115 per month, while its premium Triple Play goes for about $130 a month, as of the time of publication. Verizon's DSL packages run from $86 to $108 a month. Regular pricing for Time Warner's Triple Pack packages ranges from $119 to $225 a month. These prices, which are subject to change and can vary by region, do not include taxes or fees.
