A DSL modem connects to the Internet through a technology activated in the telephone line that is maintained by a telephone service provider. Access the controls that regulate the functions of the DSL modem through the same computer that is connected to it. You will not need any additional software to access the DSL modem and any changes made can be reversed at a later time if you choose.
Step 1
Launch the default Web browser on your hard drive by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" menu.
Step 2
Enter the numeric address that is provided with the DSL modem in the text field at the top of the Web browser's page. The numeric address will be listed in the instruction manual that accompanies the DSL modem, but can also be found at the website of the company that manufactures the modem and, in some cases, on the bottom of the modem.
Step 3
Press the "Enter" button on the keyboard to go to an introductory (aka "welcome") screen on the Web browser's page. Leave the text fields on the screen blank if this is the first time you are accessing the DSL modem. If you are returning for another session, enter the name and password that you have set up in the appropriate text fields.
Step 4
Press the "Continue," "OK" or "Enter" button on the screen, depending on the make of the DSL modem, to access the settings page. Make changes to how the DSL modem interacts with those devices connected to it.
Tips & Warnings
- Some DSL modems will not have an introductory screen and instead take you directly to their settings menu.
