Comcast Digital vs. Vonage

by Rebecca Mayglothling, Demand Media

Many consumers have stopped using local landline telephone companies in favor of cheaper, more high tech options such as cell phones and, most recently, digital phone service, also called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. Vonage and Comcast are two leading providers of digital phone services, which operate using an Internet connection. Savvy shoppers will compare these companies' services before choosing between them.

Telephone Packages

Comcast telephone offers different telephone packages dependent upon the desires of the caller. A caller may choose a plan which includes local calling only, or one including different long distance options. Each option variable raises the price of telephone service. Vonage offers a telephone service in which all domestic calls are one flat rate and international calls to select countries are another flat rate.

International Calls

Comcast packages offer different international calls. In the Carefree Minutes Worldwide package, callers receive 300 minutes per month at a flat rate to call countries listed by Comcast. A second option, the Carefree Minutes Asia plan, offers callers 100 minutes at a flat rate for select Asian countries. Vonage offers an all time flat rate for a generated list of countries around the world. There are no minute limitations on the Vonage plan.

Domestic Calls

Comcast domestic calls include the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Local calling is unlimited while long distance calls across states and Canada or Puerto Rico include a per-minute fee with the Local and More plan. The Comcast Unlimited plan offers unlimited long distance calls. Vonage offers unlimited long distance calls through six different domestic call plans. Each plan includes a monthly flat rate, and consumers are allowed to talk as often or as long as desired on calls to the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Special Offers

Comcast offers bundle deals for customers who purchase Internet and cable television in addition to telephone service. Comcast also provides a modem necessary to use your digital telephone. Vonage provides necessary hardware for setup, which includes the Vonage Phone Adapter box. Vonage allows new customers to keep their existing phone numbers.
