You may have heard that Comcast will be offering all programming over an encrypted digital signal. This migration means you need additional equipment to receive your programming. Comcast is offering a Digital Adapter as an option for viewers to receive content in addition to using a converter box. Adapters will lower the expense of receiving programming digitally.
Why You Need a Digital Box or Adapter
Comcast is migrating its entire network to transmit data digitally. The digital transmission will be encrypted to ensure that only subscribers receive the digital signal. Encryption is a method of scrambling channels so non-subscribers are unable to view programming. Customers who subscribe to services have the choice of using a digital converter box or an adapter to receive programming.
Comcast Digital Adapter
The Comcast digital adapter allows analog TV sets to receive programming that is sent over a digital signal. The adapter is a small box approximately 3 inches by 5 inches that is similar to a converter box. You plug one cable from your TV to the adapter and one cable from the adapter to the cable connection on your wall. Once installed the device will automatically transmit the channels in your lineup.
Digital Converter Box
The Comcast Digital Converter box receives digital signals that are encrypted. Installation is similar to the digital adapter. One cable goes from your TV to the box and another cable goes from the box to your cable outlet. With a digital converter box viewers are able to use the On-Screen Channel Guide, have access to music channels, and also can use Comcast On-Demand programming.
Pricing and Fees
Each home can receive two digital adapters for free. At the time of publication, there is a charge of $2 per month for each additional adapter. In addition, subscribers who have Expanded Basic service or Digital Starter are allowed one converter box with no additional charge. For those who want additional boxes, the normal fee for a converter box in your area will apply. If you must have a technician make a home visit to set up equipment, installation fees apply.
