Comcast offers high speed Internet, digital voice and digital TV, but it does not offer dial-up Internet service. All of Comcast's telecommunications products require a cable connection and cannot be provided over a phone line that's used for dial up.

Dial-Up

Dial-up service connects to the Internet over a basic phone line. Your computer's modem dials an Internet Service Provider's access number to connect to the Internet. Dial-up is significantly slower than Comcast's Internet service. Another disadvantage of dial-up is that your Internet service will be interrupted when you receive calls on your land line. Dial-up users can have a second phone line installed in their homes, but they pay additional fees every month.

High Speed Internet

Comcast's high speed Internet comes into your home via a cable connection. This connection is plugged into a special external modem that allows the consumer to access the Internet via an Ethernet cable or wireless signal. The user can surf the Internet and talk on the phone simultaneously with high speed Internet. However, if the external modem fails or resets, the consumer will lose both Internet access and phone service until the modem comes back on.

Other Services

Comcast offers digital TV and digital voice. The digital voice package is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, which uses the Internet for its phone services. This allows the user unlimited phone service. Comcast's television service offers most basic and premium cable channels, as well as an On Demand service which offers movies or television programs instantly.

Costs

Dial-up service is significantly cheaper than Comcast's high speed Internet. However, Comcast does offer several discounted introductory packages for new customers and bundles that allow consumers to pay for Internet, phone and television services with a single monthly payment. Those with dial-up have to purchase separate phone and television services from separate providers.
