How to Get a Seagate Hard Drive to Be Recognized by a Dish DVR

by Sara Bailey, Demand Media

DVRs, or digital video recorder, is a device that connects to your TV and allows you to record programs that are broadcast through your cable or satellite dish provider. Most DVRs come with limited hard drives that may cause you to be constantly deleting programs to record new ones. A work around for this is to install a DVR expander and record the shows onto the new expander's hard drive. Seagate is a well-known hard drive company that released a DVR expander of its own in 2009. Setting it up with your Dish Network DVR is a breeze.

Step 1

Position the Seagate Showcase DVR hard drive expander in close proximity to the Dish Network DVR you plan on connecting it to.

Step 2

Turn off the Dish Network DVR and plug in the Seagate drive's power cable into an open wall socket.

Step 3

Connect the Seagate drive to the Dish Network DVR using the Seagate's USB or eSata connection ports. Which connection you choose depends on the DVR model. If the DVR has a USB port, use USB. If not, use eSata.

Step 4

Turn the Seagate drive on and turn the Dish Network DVR on. An on-screen prompt will display and ask you to format the Seagate hard drive to use it with the DVR.

Step 5

Select "Yes" to format the Seagate hard drive. Once the process is finished, the Dish Network DVR will recognize the Seagate drive as internal hard drive and will save its recorded programs on it after the main hard drive fills up.
