Vonage and Charter Communications are two companies that provide telephone services in the United Sates. Beyond this similarity, however, they differ not only in terms of the type of telephone service they offer, but the scope of their enterprise. Charter covers a wide range of telecommunications services in addition to phone, whereas Vonage focuses primarily on broadband-based voice and messaging services.

Vonage Provides VoIP

Vonage is a company that specializes in Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, the technology that sends voice data over a high-speed Internet connection rather than through conventional wires or cables, and offers services within this specialty. You will need to connect a phone adapter to your current high-speed Internet connection, then your phone to the adapter. Once it's set up, you can start making VoIP calls on your regular phone. You also have the option to use VoIP phones, or microphones to speak into your computer. Charter, on the other hand, is similar to traditional phones in that it relies on wires and telephone jacks, and you do not need an Internet connection to make calls. Charter is also different from traditional phones because it uses Internet protocol to transport calls over a private network.

Charter also Provides TV, Internet, Phone

Charter Communications is a cable company that provides video services such as high definition programming and video on demand movies, in addition to high-speed Internet services of speeds up to 25 Mbps or 60 Mbps in certain markets, as well as landline telephone services. It serves 5.5 million residential and business customers in 27 states, as stated in their website at the time of publication. Charter offers an unlimited phone plan that includes local and some long-distance calls, and international calling plans with a set number of included minutes per month to 200 worldwide destinations.

Charter Offers Individual and Combined Services, or Bundles

With Charter, you can select which services you would like to purchase, or you can combine and tailor services according to your needs. Charter offers two-service and three-service bundles, that might combine basic TV with Internet Express with speeds of 12 Mbps, or Digital TV with Internet Express, or High Definition TV with Lite Internet with speeds of 1 Mbp together with unlimited nationwide calling.

Vonage Offers Calling Plans

Vonage offers international and domestic calling plans. Domestic plans may be unlimited or a given number of minutes, such as 300 or 750 minutes of outbound local and long distance calls within the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, with additional minutes billed extra. Vonage to Vonage calls are free, as are all incoming calls. Long distance discounts to 10 countries are also included. International calling plans allow you to make unlimited calls to landlines in 60 to 80 different countries, as well as unlimited calls to cell phones in 10 to 40 countries. Calling within the U.S. and Canada are included in these plans, as is free 411 Enhanced Directory Assistance.
