Where Can I Get a Comcast CableCard?

by Grace Riley, Demand Media

The Comcast CableCARD is a device that allows users to receive cable television service in their home. It is an alternative to dish or cable box service. However, without a digital cable box receiver, users will not be able to employ two-way cable services, such as pay-per-view, because the card is not equipped to send input back to Comcast.

What is the CableCARD?

The Comcost CableCard is a card roughly the size of a credit card which is inserted into the television or other devices such as TiVo. It eliminates the need for a set-top box cable receiver, but it does not support as many services.

Comcast Service

To get a Comcast CableCARD, you need to contact Comcast and open an account, if you do not already have one. The CableCARD is a Comcast product and therefore must be serviced by the company. Comcast does not offer services everywhere in the United States.

Acquiring a CableCARD

Customers cannot buy a CableCARD. They must lease one from Comcast. As a result, you will make a monthly payment which will be terminated when you end the service. At that time, Comcast will retake possession of the card. The lease fee will be on your monthly bill from Comcast, along with all other services you receive from the company, including cable service via the card.

Installing a CableCARD

Comcast requires that a company technician install the CableCARD for you. In order to get installation service, you will need to make an appointment with Comcast to arrange a time for a technician to come to your home. This will be one of the final steps when you contact the company to begin service for the product.
