AT&T; is the country's largest provider of landline telephone service. Their U-verse system is a fiber-optic network that connects your digital television, landline telephone and Internet service through a central "brain" called the Wireless Gateway. This system allows you to check your voicemail and control your DVR through your computer or smartphone, as well as watch digitally recorded programming on any television or computer in the house.
How U-Verse Works
U-verse uses a system known as Internet protocol television, which connects a high-speed Internet connection into a box atop each television in your house. This connection is delivered through the Wireless Gateway, a piece of equipment that is necessary to use U-verse. Since all the televisions, computers and telephones are connected to the Wireless Gateway, U-verse allows you to do things such as control your DVR from your computer and watch digitally recorded shows on any television in the house. Since the programs can be watched on any television, the device is known as the TotalHome DVR.
Required Equipment
To use AT&T; U-verse, you will need a Wireless Gateway. This is an intelligent device that connects to the Internet to receive television signals. You will also need a remote control and a digital set-top receiver for each television set. AT&T; offers a standard receiver and a receiver with a built-in TotalHome DVR. To use TotalHome DVR, only one of the televisions in the house need have a TotalHome DVR receiver. The standard receivers offered by AT&T; are compatible with it.
Number of Televisions
When it comes to U-verse, four is the magic number. The TotalHome DVR can record up to four programs simultaneously. With Multiview, you can watch four programs at the same time on a single television set. Although you can have six television sets with U-verse receivers -- and all six will work with your U-verse service -- only four of them will show live U-verse programming at the same time.
Interactive Applications
In addition to Multiview, your U-verse television service has several interactive features. Travelers and picnickers alike may find On Demand weather useful. Smartphone users can control their DVR and browse television listings from afar, as well as their digital telephone voicemail. The U-bar is a frame on the television screen that can be customized with weather, stocks and sports scores.
