Both Verizon and Optimum offer packages that include phone, TV and Internet service bundled into one. Verizon calls this FiOS; Optimum calls this its Triple Play. Each service has different features that may be suited to some users more than others, and choosing the appropriate package depends primarily on your personal needs.
Internet
Optimum offers two Internet services, either 15 mbps or 30 mbps, which is its quickest service. Verizon FiOS offers three packages: 15 mbps, 25 mbps or 50 mbps. This means you can get quicker Internet on Verizon FiOS, but you will have to pay more. The middle package from FiOS is about the same cost as Optimum's 30 mbps package, but it is slower. FiOS routers also cannot be restarted in the same way, so they are harder to troubleshoot.
Phone
Internet phone service is also provided by both companies. Both services offer unlimited calling to anywhere in the United State, but FiOS' unlimited package also comes with free calls to Puerto Rico and Canada. At the time of publication, an additional line costs $15 with FiOS, but just $10 with Optimum. In addition, Optimum provides its customers with 411 service free of charge, while FiOS customers must pay to use 411 information services.
Television
Both providers offer all standard channels, as well as high definition (HD) capabilities for their boxes. FiOS offers significantly more channels, over 385 standard definition channels, and over 125 HD channels. Optimum service provides up to approximately 150 channels and a little over 100 HD channels. Premium channels such as HBO and Showtime can be added to each service for about the same cost, and a DVR box capable of recording shows is available for an additional cost.
Cost
When comparing most services, FiOS costs more than Optimum Triple Play. However, the lowest cost package for each service is $89.99 at the time of publication. Extra services such as DVR or quicker Internet service cost more with FiOS. However, other services, such as premium channel Video On Demand, is included in the FiOS packages but must be purchased at additional cost with Optimum. When comparing packages with similar added services, FiOS typically costs about $10 to $20 per month more than Optimum Triple Play.
