Comcast offers high-speed cable Internet while Verizon offers DSL and FiOS high-speed Internet. Both high-speed Internet services have benefits and limitations. The service you decide to subscribe to will probably depend on availability, speeds, features and service. As of June 2011, FiOS customers are required to sign a long-term contract to establish service where Comcast and Verizon DSL subscribers are not.

Availability

When it comes to establishing new Internet service at a particular address, it is important to determine whether the provider under consideration provides coverage in your area. Comcast is the largest Internet service provider in the United States but there are many areas the provider does not service. The same holds true for Verizon. It is important to contact the provider directly or visit the website and enter the address at which you will require Internet service to be sure you can subscribe with the provider of your choice. Verizon FiOS availability is not as widespread as its DSL service. Washington, California, Florida, New York, Virginia and Maryland are a few of the states where FiOS high-speed Internet is available, but only in certain areas of these states.

Speeds

Comcast has a range of plans with download speeds that range from 3 Mbps up to 105 Mbps, depending on the plan. Verizon's DSL high speed Internet offers download speeds of up to 15 Mbps while its FiOS high-speed Internet offers download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Both providers are constantly working on offering subscribers more speeds to enhance Internet experiences. Comcast's CEO, Brian Roberts, demonstrated a modem that facilitates speeds of up to 1 Gbps at the 2011 National Cable & Telecommunications Association Conference in Chicago.

Features

When it comes to features, Comcast and Verizon share many similarities - subscribers have access to 24/7 customer support, security software for more secure Internet surfing, free email accounts with storage and free access to live games on ESPN3.com. Comcast offers subscribers a feature called PowerBoost that allows for faster downloads. Verizon points out that its subscribers don't need "boosters" to increase the speed of downloads because the FiOS connection is consistently fast.

Service

Verizon's FiOS service has been rated number one in customer satisfaction by PCMag.com from 2006 to 2010. Comcast has not had this level of success in the past but is using the social media tool, Twitter, to follow-up with disgruntled subscribers. The company is also reaching out to subscribers who make their dissatisfaction known through posts on various Websites and offering credits to customers whenever technicians do not show up for appointments within the agreed upon time-frame.
