If you are away from home but want to record one of your favorite television shows, Verizon's FiOS mobile remote allows you to sync your cell phone with your DVR box. All you need is a compatible cell phone and a Wi-Fi adaptor.
Components Needed
To implement the Verizon FiOS mobile remote service, you need to have the FiOS high-definition DVR or a Verizon HD set-top box and a Wi-Fi router that connects to one or the other. You also need a cell phone that will recognize the Verizon FiOS mobile application. As of 2011, compatible cell phones include the Motorola's DROID, HTC's Imagio, Eris Android OS 2.1, Touch Pro 2 or Incredible and HTX's Nexus One. As new cell phones become available, you can check for compatible brands by visiting the Verizon Wireless website.
Registration and Syncing
To set up your Verizon FiOS mobile remote, you must plug your Wi-Fi router into your Verizon FiOS HD DVR or set-top box. Next, you will need to register your compatible cell phone with the DVR or set-top box by selecting the "widgets" button on your TV remote control. Scroll through the "widget bazaar" list until you find the "FiOS Mobile Remote" widget. Choose "Register a Mobile Device" and input your cell number to activate the registration. Once this is done, you must download the FiOS Mobile Remote application, which was sent via text, on your cell phone.
Features
Once you have synced your cell phone with your FiOS DVR or set-top box, you can use your cell phone as a remote control for your home DVR. Features include auto-importing your favorite shows list, sending your favorite photos directly from your phone to your TV and even setting up your TV to mute when you receive an incoming call on your cell phone.
Recording Shows
If you want to record a specific show with your Verizon FiOS mobile remote, simply open the "MyRemote" application on your cell phone and select the "Guide" button to find a show to record. Press the "DVR Control" button on the show's page and select the red "Record" button to activate the DVR (or set-top box) to record the show.
