With the ubiquitous nature of the Internet, it's important to have reliable, high-speed access to the Web. NetZero and Verizon both offer high-speed Internet access to residential customers. They each have DSL or broadband services, which means that you won't be reliant on dial-up service, so you'll experience faster load times without tying up your phone line. Both services offer a number of features to consider before making a decision.
Reliability and Service
NetZero began offering DSL Internet service in 2011. As part of the service, NetZero provides free telephone support that you can access anytime, day or night. In terms of reliability, NetZero does not provide specific statistics, but it gets average ratings in reviews. NetZero also offers a high-speed dial-up service with good reliability and faster connection speeds than average dial-up connections. Verizon provides access to free support 24/7. Verizon Internet customers can call a toll-free number or access support services through online chat. Verizon also provides a number of support features on its site including video tutorials and customer forums. Reviewers give Verizon high marks for reliability.
Extra Features
As part of the NetZero DSL package, you get a wireless modem with a built-in firewall free when you sign up. You can also host multiple email addresses through NetZero. It provides DSL subscribers built-in spam and virus protection, as well as the capability of supporting embedded video in email. Verizon also offers its Internet customers multiple email accounts and wireless access in specific areas. In addition, with a Verizon Internet account, you also get a web space that you can use for a personal blog or website.
Other Considerations
NetZero DSL service is available to both Mac and PC users. Verizon high-speed Internet is available only to PC users. The availability of both services varies depending on location. Connection speeds also vary by location. Verizon high-speed Internet packages are much more expensive if you aren't a subscriber to Verizon's phone service, as well.
Cost
As of June 2011, NetZero DSL service costs $9.95 per month with a setup fee of $29.95. NetZero does require a contract in many areas that includes a termination fee if you break the contract early. In some cases, NetZero also charges a $2.95 network management fee. NetZero provides a 30-day, money-back guarantee. Subscribers who cancel their service within the first 30 days receive a refund for the first month's subscription fee and for any setup fees. NetZero also has a free dial-up service that is very basic. Verizon has Internet packages starting at 14.99 per month, as of this writing. The lowest plans bundle home phone service and Internet. Some Verizon plans require a two-year contract with early termination fees.
