Is Time Warner Internet a Cable Connection?

by Melanie Jo Triebel, Demand Media

With the wide range of Internet service providers and Internet technologies now available, it's easy to become overwhelmed. Many consumers wonder which companies offer which technologies, and how they work. Time Warner, now an Internet service provider, offers a variety of home Internet services, but all are fueled by the same basic technology -- cable.

Broadband Internet Technologies

Broadband Internet is any form of Internet in which the information sent and received is delivered digitally as "bits" of data and at high speeds. Broadband Internet, or high-speed Internet, thus includes a number of technologies, such as cable Internet, Digital Subscriber Line -- which is Internet delivered via telephone lines -- satellite, wireless, fiber-optic and even Internet delivered via power lines.

Time Warner Technology

Time Warner Internet uses cable Internet technology. Although the company often refers in its marketing materials to its "fiber rich" network, it doesn't have or use a fiber-optic network but delivers Internet using its existing cable network.

Options

Within the framework of Time Warner's cable Internet service, the Internet choices offered differ primarily in the speed they offer. Time Warner calls its fastest Internet option Wideband Internet. The company also offers Road Runner Internet, Road Runner with PowerBoost -- extra speed for downloading large files -- and EarthLink high-speed Internet.

Mobile Internet

In addition to its home Internet services using the company's cable lines, Time Warner also offers mobile Internet. Time Warner's mobile Internet isn't naturally accessed using a cable line. Instead, the company's mobile Internet service is wireless Internet service, accessed from a laptop by using an Internet card or USB plugin from the company.
