Does Comcast Offer Satellite Internet?

by Melanie Jo Triebel, Demand Media

Customers looking to upgrade from dial-up Internet to broadband Internet usually have many questions about the various types of Internet service available and about the providers who offer them. Comcast, one of the best-known providers of television and Internet service, offers broadband Internet service in a few different forms.

Broadband Internet

Broadband Internet is another name for high-speed Internet. Broadband Internet can use any one of a number of technologies for delivering content: satellite Internet, DSL, cable Internet, wireless technology, fiber-optic cables or even, in some areas, Internet delivered via power lines. Whatever the hardware used, however, broadband Internet downloads and uploads all types of information digitally, as bits of data.

Satellite Internet

Satellite Internet is one of the many forms of broadband Internet. Satellite Internet uses satellites--machines orbiting the earth--to send and receive data over the Internet. This technology works in much the same fashion as the use of satellites to transmit other types of information, such as telephone calls and television programming. Satellite Internet is considerably faster than traditional dial-up connections but its speed still usually lags behind DSL or cable modem speeds.

Comcast Internet

Comcast's broadband Internet service is now called XFinity Internet. XFinity is cable Internet, delivered via the company's existing cable lines, through a user's cable modem. Comcast also offers its customers wireless Internet access, delivered through the company's wireless network. Comcast does not offer satellite Internet service at this time.

Satellite Internet Providers

Although Comcast does not offer satellite Internet service, many companies do. Although the availability of satellite Internet varies depending upon your location, the companies offering satellite Internet service in the United States include Earthlink, WildBlue, HughesNet, SkyWay and StarBand.
