Internet access and use has become a way of life in the 21st century. People in their twenties don't remember a time without it. Once you've decided on an Internet provider, you'll want to get the hardware connected to your computer and start surfing the Web and checking email as soon as possible. Internet companies provide the software and guidance to do so, such as Qwest's Quickconnect.
Software
Quickconnect is the software that Qwest provides when you sign up for their broadband Internet service. Having the Quickconnect software is almost as good as having a technician come to your home and do the connections and installation for you. Quickconnect will help you get your modem connected correctly. If the modem isn't installed correctly, you won't be able to connect to the Internet.
Modems
When you sign up for Internet service with Qwest, you can purchase a modem from them that will be compatible with their service. They typically ship the hardware to you expedited so that you can have it as soon as possible. A CD containing the Quickconnect software will arrive with the modem package. All you have to do is insert it into your computer's CD drive. This is a good option, as you will have a hard copy of the software if you ever need to re-install it. Alternatively, if you already own a modem that is compatible with Qwest's service you can download the Quickconnect software from Qwest's website at http://member.q.com. You can click on "Qwest Installer" under "Downloads" and you'll be provided with the software electronically. Obviously, this option will only work if you already have Internet service to access the web page.
Guided Setup
Quickconnect is a user-friendly guided setup. It works much like any installation wizard that will give you options to select from and will move to the following step once you've chosen. Quickconnect will not just install the modem to get you up and running but also has an installation section that will help you set up email, if necessary.
Support
Although it is user-friendly, the Quickconnect software isn't written to set up all modems that are supported by Qwest. The best solution, but not always an option, is to purchase the modem from Qwest when you sign up for their Internet service. This will assure that you have a modem that is addressed by the Quickconnect software. If you opted to stay with a modem that you already have, one that Qwest supports, then you can access the administration web page using temporary Internet settings provided by Qwest. This would require that the modem be working at least enough to get you connected to the Internet. If you don't have Internet access, Qwest's technical support team can walk you through troubleshooting and setup over the phone.
