Time Warner offers a selection of digital services including digital TV, digital home phone, Switched Digital Video and a host of related options and services. Time Warner serves customers in 28 U.S. states and began offering the majority of its digital services after a nationwide conversion to a coaxial and fiber optic network completed in 2001.
Digital TV, Digital Video Recorder
Time Warner's digital TV provides high definition and regular television channels via coaxial cable lines. Digital Video Recorder (DVR) boxes are available as a premium option with your cable service. DVR is available in single room or whole house versions and it allows the viewer to pause, fast-forward, and record live television transmissions. A single DVR is capable of recording up to 80 hours of regular programming or 25 hours of HD programming that can be watched while another program is recorded. If you opt for the whole house version you can watch your recorded programs in up to 4 rooms at once, store up to 75 hours of programming and record up to 2 shows at a time. Time Warner DVR also has an optional remote DVR Manager that allows you to perform the search and record functions on your recorder from a remote location using your computer or smartphone.
On Demand, Start Over & Look Back
Time Warner's On Demand service allows the viewer to select programming from a menu of primetime, children's, HD and premium options, as well as a selection of pay-per-view movies and titles. Once selected the programming plays with all the control functions of a DVD player including rewind and pause. Time Warner's Start Over feature allows viewers to restart a live program already in progress so that none of the show is missed. Time Warner's Look Back allows viewers to access primetime programming for up to 72 hours after it has aired by selecting it from an onscreen menu. Start Over and Look Back services are both free with Time Warner Digital Cable service.
Switched Digital Video
The Switched Digital Video system changes the transmission of high definition (HD) channels from a constant to an on demand schedule. This means that HD channels will be transmitted only when required by a viewer so that the bandwidth that would otherwise be used to transmit unwatched channels can be held in reserve for those who require it. The result is a more efficient delivery of the large amounts of data necessary for HD programming. The one drawback to the system is the failure of DVR and other timed video recording devices to function. However, tuning adapters are available to enable recording. The SDV system has not yet been installed in all of Time Warner's coverage areas.
Digital Home Phone
Time Warner offers Digital Home Phone service through its cable lines. A variety of plans are available including unlimited local, regional long distance and tri-state options. Available digital phone features include voicemail, private listing status, caller ID, 3-way calling and call waiting. Caller ID can also be displayed on your TV so that you can see who is calling without missing your show. Time Warner's online VoiceZone feature allows customers to access their digital phone account, options and services online and adjust everything as they see fit.
