How to Use a DTV HD DVR With VP50-Pro

by Sara Bailey, Demand Media

The DVDO VP50-Pro is a video upscaler that is used to convert video from standard definition to near high definition quality on the fly from a number of different connectible devices. One such device that can be connected to the VP50-Pro is a DirecTV HD-DVR, which records shows directly from the TV onto its internal hard drive. The "HD" in the title could be a little misleading since the DVR does record the shows in standard definition, but does not display them in HD. This is where VP50-Pro comes into play.

Step 1

Setup the VP50-Pro next to the DirecTV HD-DVR and plug its power cable into a nearby wall socket.

Step 2

Locate the HDMI cable running into the TV from the DirecTV HD-DVR. Pull out the end connected to the TV and connect it to the first HDMI input port on the back of the VP50-Pro upscaler.

Step 3

Connect the second of the HDMI cables into the VP50-Pro HDMI output port on the back of the unit. Connect the other end into the TV HDMI input port to which the HD-DVR was previously connected.

Step 4

Turn on the TV, and the VP50-Pro initial setup is displayed on the screen. Select the brand of your television, such as Sony, Toshiba or Samsung.

Step 5

Select which resolution your TV is capable of on the next line, and that completes the setup. The DirecTV HD-DVR now will be upscaled using the VP50-Pro. This means that standard definition shows will be displayed in near HD quality on the TV.
