Verizon FiOS Internet Limitations

by Myles Ellison, Demand Media

Verizon's FiOS provides high-speed Internet with download speeds from 15 to 150 Mbps and upload speeds from 5 to 35 Mbps, depending on your location. The FiOS network runs off fiber optic wiring, which produces faster speeds than traditional DSL and cable Internet. Although Verizon FiOS provides perks such as nine email accounts with 10 MB of storage, 24/7 customer support and remote Wi-Fi hotspot access, be sure to read the fine print prior to purchase to understand the full limitations of the FiOS offer.

Availability

Verizon FiOS has availability limitations for people in rural areas. If FiOS is not available in your area, however, Verizon offers other packages for Internet, television and phone service that may be available. While these services will not operate on the fiber optic network of FiOS, they are still backed by Verizon and offer competitive speeds and prices.

Equipment

The FiOS equipment you receive will be new or a fully inspected, returned unit. As of the time of publication, the router you receive upon installation is advertised as a $139.99 value, which includes firewall protection to all wireless devices using it. The fine print, however, explains that should you keep this router, you will be charged $99.

Speed

According the Verizon FiOS fine print, "Actual download and upload speeds will vary based on numerous factors, such as condition of wiring at your location, computer configuration, Internet and network congestion, and speed of website servers you access, among other factors." Verizon will set up your own fiber optic network, but the speeds will vary based on the wiring and distance you are from the Verizon central office. Also, newer computers may experience faster Internet than older ones.

Plans

Verizon FiOS plans come with introductory monthly rates, but be sure to read the fine print because one-year contracts, taxes and fees apply upon signing up. Be sure you understand all the fees associated with FiOS high-speed Internet when signing up for Verizon FiOS.
